In Tatjana Vall’s first solo exhibition at BRITTA RETTBERG, the Munich and Berlin-based artist examines photography and its inherent production and perceptual promises of memory and time. The exhibited works allow various temporal dimensions to intersect, in which technology-driven uncertainties and potentials of the present converge with historical questions about the technical eye. Photographic experimentation, optical instruments, and technical apparatuses that structure our lives become both subject and method of investigation.

“But I don’t want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.” – Aldous Huxley, Brave New World There is something deeply human, and therefore deeply naïve, about our obsession with shrinking the infinite into a manageable image. We map the sky, turn it into coordinates, describe it with words that make it feel less alien. But space is not a rendering, and Tatjana Vall’s Warm Silver Skies reminds us of this. Here, the cosmos is not an open frontier but a conceptual trap, where our desire for knowledge clashes with the limits of perception.

Wie kann das unendliche Universum erforscht oder gar verstanden werden? In ihrer multimedialen Ausstellung “Warm Silver Skies” bewegt sich Tatjana Vall an den Schnittstellen von Wissenschaft, Science-Fiction, spekulativer Technikgeschichte und Kunst. Sie verbindet dabei Video, Skulptur und digitale Wandarbeiten.

Sonnenkollektoren, künstliches Licht und gravierte Steinplatten. In einer mehrteiligen Installation kombiniert Tatjana Vall auf poetische Weise Technologien, Materialien und Kosmologie. Ein Teil ihrer Arbeit befindet sich im Vestibül im ersten Stock, hier fangen Solarpanele Energie ein, mit der in einen angrenzenden Raum eine installative Skulptur beleuchtet und in Bewegung gesetzt wird. Künstliches Licht bricht sich hier in Spiegeln und wird durch eine sich kräuselnde Wasseroberfläche reflektiert.

Die Gesellschaft erscheint manchmal hin- und hergerissen: Vorsprung durch Technik? Zurück zur Natur? Oder doch lieber irgendwas dazwischen? Diese Fragen und Konflikte greifen auch zehn junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler in ihrer Ausstellung MANA auf, die zurzeit in München und im Netz zu sehen ist. Kryptogeld und Mikroalgen, Game Engines und symbiotische Oktopusse vermischen sich zu einer inspirierenden Erfahrung.

MANA ist eine hybride Kunst-Ausstellung, die vom 13.11.2021-13.12.2021 sowohl virtuell (Hinweis: am besten Google Chrome verwenden) als auch physisch in der VERPACKEREI GÖ stattfindet. Mit der Verknüpfung von zwei Ausstellungswelten reizt MANA die Grenzen zwischen Räumen, Dimensionen und Wirklichkeiten aus. Zehn Künstler:innen setzen sich mit diesem Spannungsfeld auseinander und zeigen jeweils ein physisches und ein virtuelles Werk. Die Positionen ergänzen, beantworten und vervollständigen einander, ohne sich dabei zu gleichen.

The group exhibition “Sugar Pie Honey Punch” by students of the of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich presented a total of 16 artistic positions in the new, still under reconstruction, training hall of the boxingstudio “Boxwerk“. Within this collaboration, a broad spectrum of new, partly site-specific works emerged that deal conceptually with space and its use and thematically address structures of power, impact and negotiation of the body, alleged violence and social cohesion through sport. Deconstructing and reinterpreting the training equipment and sports paraphernalia of the Boxwerk creates an installative, multimedia interplay of sculpture, photography, video and performance. With the project „You are going to take a bath in good luck.“, multi-media artists Tatjana Vall and Justin Urbach encounter transhuman realities with an equally artificial and vulnerable physicality.
Starting from the trend towards self-optimization of the human body in Western society, the artists develop a narrative centered on a sunbed in order to expose questionable values of an outdated consumer behavior.
„The change of values over the past few decades has shown, that the interests of the first world forward-thinking population is shifted towards the ‚nonmaterial‘ and ‚original’. Following this, transhumanistic tendencies that could become more relevant and real in near future could be a sort of isolation due to self optimization, driven by the curiosity to overcome biological and physical barriers.“ Vall explains.

Nachts ist es am schönsten: Wenn der Raum bläulich schimmert und die Passanten wie Motten vom Licht angezogen werden. Wäre tagsüber nicht ein so vorfrühlingshaftes Wetter mit Sonnenschein satt, man würde beim Anblick der Rauminstallation “You Are Going To Take A Bath In Good Luck” von Tatjana Vall und Justin Urbach große Lust bekommen, sich für einige Minuten auf die Sonnenbank zu legen. read more
